Letter on the Third — August 2026

Dear Datamax Family,

"Communication works for those who work at it." – Theologian and Author John Powell

John Powell's quote reminds us all that effective communication isn't simply a natural ability. It's a skill that requires discipline, intentionality, and continual growth. Like any habit of excellence, communication improves when we work at it. It begins long before a conversation takes place, and also with how we understand ourselves, how we lead ourselves, and how we build trust with others.

Self-Awareness Creates Better Communication.

Effective communication begins with self-awareness. That means understanding not only how you think and communicate, but also how your words, actions, and emotions affect those around you.
Before sending an email, leading a meeting, or responding to a difficult situation, it's worth asking, "How will this be received?" When we become more aware of ourselves and our audience, we communicate with greater clarity, purpose, and respect.

Self-Leadership Creates Better Outcomes.

Self-leadership is the ability to empower and motivate yourself to achieve the outcomes desired.  Strong self-awareness is a foundation and an essential component for Self-Leadership.

Self-Leadership is put into action with consistent preparation, personal discipline, and strong habits of excellence which support positive outcomes. The processes we follow are critical to performance. Attention to the process achieves better outcomes and drives continuous growth.  Finally, when we are committed to continual growth with intention, we become better communicators, stronger teammates, and more effective leaders.

Trust Creates Better Relationships.

Strong communication ultimately builds trust, and trust is earned through connection, competence, and character.

  • Character is demonstrated by doing what you say you're going to do. It’s ethical trust.

  • Competence is built through consistently doing the job well. It’s technical trust.

  • Connection comes from caring, listening, and being engaged. It’s personal trust.

When these qualities come together, people begin to see you as someone they can depend on. Communication as we see it becomes much more than exchanging information. It reflects who we are as leaders and teammates. As we continue to grow in self-awareness, practice self-leadership, and intentionally build trust, we strengthen our culture and create better experiences for one another and for every customer we serve. But just like Powell reminds us, it only works if we actively work at it.

People-Centered Culture Wins.

Respectfully,
